Interactive Designer Stephanie Fynn has created her own breath communication device. Breath communication devices are used for people who can‘t communicate verbally, for example, someone with Locked-In Syndrome. Stephanie Fynn writes beautifully about her own motivation for creating this device and shows images of her creative process.
„The Breath Communication Device translates breath pattern into language, breaking down the barrier for those with disabilities who want to communicate but can’t. The Breath Communication Device was created as a result of my own personal observations as a disability support worker when conducting my ethnographic research into thoughtless acts. I identified that there are many avenues in which the current technologies could benefit disabled peoples’ lives. The biggest issue that was brought to my attention was that there are certain individuals who are non-verbal, immobile and incapable of performing sign language. Any form of independence is completely hindered; just imagine constantly wanting to connect and share your thoughts with someone, yet your body is working against you, restricting this basic human right. I wanted to investigate utilising breath sensor technology and intuitive interface design to improve peoples’ lifestyles and help aid the gift of communication.“
