A breath token is a breathing exploration that I develop for friends & clients and send out as a gift.
Standing while sitting
Recently I took part in a workshop held by my teacher Erika Kemmann. We explored basic aspects of breath work in-depth and started with sitting. Erika said that while sitting, we often forget our legs and the perception is that the upright posture comes from lengthening and straightening the spine. In fact, the upright posture begins with the contact of the feet with the floor, as if we were standing. When we press down into the floor with our feet or do a walking motion, for example, we can get a sense of potentially standing while sitting. It connects the feet with the head and we can experience the pelvis as a stable base for verticality. These qualities, in turn, are helpful for the breath to flow through the torso with ease. “Standing while sitting” creates a dynamic way of sitting, readying the body for a smooth transition to come up to standing and vice versa.
Benefits I experienced were
stability/mobility
upright posture
free flow of breath
connection between feet and head
anchoring of the pelvis
experience of verticality
