A breath token is a breathing exploration that I develop for friends & clients and send out as a gift.
I‘m travelling this weekend and as I lay in the hotel bed in the evening, I started to open out my arms and then fold them over my chest. The movement was very fluid and, the longer I did it, it felt like the movement of breathing itself: opening and closing, expanding and narrowing. It was very satisfying and so I‘d like to offer it here as a breath token.
Lying down on our backs, let‘s raise the arms above us and lower them in a semi-circle to the sides until they come to rest on the ground. Let‘s stay in this resting position for a moment. When we‘re ready, we raise the arms above us and fold them over the chest. As always we find our own pace and rhythm. We let the breath come and go by itself.
To create some ease in raising the arms, it helps to first focus on the fingertips, as if waking them up, spreading them a little.
To completely relax the arms and hands in the open or folded position, it helps to sense their weight, letting them sink wherever they land.
What does the movement of opening or folding feel like? What about the different positions? Or the letting go of the arms and hands?
Benefits I experienced were
sense of flow
access to my state of being
softening the chest
support of the breath movement
deepening of breathing
calm
