      Breathing

      Breathing is connection & communication

      Breathing

Breathing is a self-regulatory cycle which connects us with all the cycles of nature and all other living beings. Each breath cycle mirrors the journey of life. Breathing is how we begin and end this journey and the breath accompanies everything that happens in between.

      Natural Breathing

Natural breathing is the breath as it flows at any given moment.

In my Natural Breathing practice I offer movement- and touch-based explorations to experience and learn about breathing. My approach is

experiential: anything we learn about breathing we also try out and experience.

creative: we use props, our imagination, writing, drawing and music.

communicative: we share what we experience.

multi-disciplinary: we learn through many different body, movement and breath methodologies.

cognitive: the transitions between experiencing and understanding what is happening with the body and the breath is fluid.

The aim is not to teach a breathing method or a tool but to experience and learn about breathing together.

I look forward to breathing with you

“I was touched by the way you create a space for breathing and by your openness to deal with whatever wants to happen or show itself as well as your clarity with which you enabled me to find access to my breath. I felt accompanied and yet free to discover my own breathing and find poetry in it. There was something that expanded in me, over and over again, a fullness without weight, a handful of air which titillates and greets me inside and then leaves lightly.”
      Nina, body therapist

What others say about Natural Breathing

“Nicola is a true master of her field. As a yoga teacher I‘ve been interested in breath teaching for many years and in Nicola I‘ve found what I was looking for. Her breath teaching is intelligent and uses different methodologies, which allows her to specifically address the situations and needs of each participant. With Nicola‘s guidance I‘ve learnt to invite the breath and let it flow so that it can spend groundedness and lightness at the same time. I‘m looking forward to the next class!”
      Tina, Yoga teacher

“I had the sensation (or image) that my breath had the same power as a wildwater that winds through my body. My ribs, my bones are like rocks and my breath flows between them. Until now I’d thought my breath was weak and fragile.
In the natural breath work one explores parts of the body, states of being… This brings up images, emotions, associations that sometimes seem almost „crazy“. Natural Breathing is a deep, exciting experience of one‘s own body, breath and creativity.“
      Catherine, cultural manager

“It was very relaxing the combination of breathing and writing. The breathing part brought words to the writing without thinking about them, they came out reflecting my deeper feelings, mirroring them in a very clear way, and put some order in them. The whole experience was really working well for me. And afterwards I felt calm for days; more calm than I normally feel, which was really amazing.”
      Ruthie, youth project director

“I was touched by the way you create a space for breathing and by your openness to deal with whatever wants to happen or show itself as well as your clarity with which you enabled me to find access to my breath. I felt accompanied and yet free to discover my own breathing and find poetry in it. There was something that expanded in me, over and over again, a fullness without weight, a handful of air which titillates and greets me inside and then leaves lightly.”
      Nina, body therapist

“Something I really appreciated about the breathing exercise is Nicola’s focus on the inherent, natural rhythm of breathing. I love to run and do yoga and both of these activities are focused on breathing in a very intensive way, whereas the breathing workshop was focused on ‘doing nothing’ and this in itself was very powerful. I wrote:”Be fluid like the sand.”
      Tamana, student

“Nicola brings a quiet, non-verbal listening quality to an interaction which opens up another way of thinking,  a space for something else. She is very intuitive, communicates on many levels with fluidity and specific associations. A poetic thinker.“
      Leila, consultant and executive coach

„The breath is like an indicator for balance. Only when the body is in balance, measured by the breathing – no matter how odd it may feel – change can happen (to feeling less odd). Balance can‘t be created by will.“
      Axel, management coach

“Drawing upon more than a decade of research, Nicola Caroli will give you the gold nuggets of what there is to know, learn, understand and embody about Natural Breathing. With her knowledge, wisdom and intuition she serves as a kind of funnel for those teachings & exercises that work best in the field of Breathing. Thanks to the somatic approach of her work you will be simultaneously stimulated cognitively, emotionally, and physically.

As your body is invited to integrate the teachings right away, you will be able to tap into your innate corporal memory storing capabilities. Secondly, as the body becomes the object of curious, academic, playful research, you will remember the capacity and magnitude of your natural breath as it moves you into aliveness every moment of your life.”
Judith, Yoga teacher & body worker

„Since I do breath work I no longer let myself be influenced by how I‘m supposed to breathe, like in Pilates, for example and the physical excercise is just as effective and doesn‘t stress me as much.
In the Natural Breathing session my current personal themes like letting go and grounding materialise in words and images. Problems like shallow breathing, panic attacks and fear of touch become art and the everyday living with them becomes acceptable.“
      Cristina, artist and educator

“In Nicola‘s workshop I learnt wonderful tools to find out what my very own breathing rhythm is like. And that helps me every day to stay tuned into myself.”
      Doro, Grinberg practitioner

“Through breathing communication happens and when we are not aware of breathing, this communication is lost.”
      Anita, psychologist

“I remembered your breath teaching at a moment where I was extremely aware of how my current stress is negatively impacting my breathing. The excercises worked magic: I was centred and released a critical level of stress. I was on the DLR and the extra challenge of the moving train and bag on my back helped create stillness and focus. Lovely. Thank you.”
      Vanessa, movement director

“The breath work is very helpful for meditation. In meditation we’re told to focus on the breath but it’s very unclear how that’s supposed to work. Natural breathing is like ground zero. From there you can explore further.”
      Galia, dancer

“With each breathing practice I understood better what my body feels and needs. For example, I could feel when my body was tired and needed some rest. This was one of the biggest surprises for me, that I hadn‘t been able to notice something as obvious as tiredness before. During the breathing practice I could feel it clearly.
I also learned to breathe more naturally and easily. This was particularly helpful for specific situations, while jogging for example. Before I would follow a particular breathing pattern for that. In the breathing practice I learnt that imposing a breathing pattern interferes with natural breathing and that the rhythm and depth of the breathing depends on what I‘m doing with my body and on environmental conditions.
This breathing practice helped me to gain a better understanding of my own body, to feel more comfortable with myself and to feel better physically. I am sure that with this breathing practice everyone can learn something new and get surprised.”

      Lena, IT-engineer

    • About me

Who I am and what I do

I’m a freelance breath teacher and teach Natural Breathing for children and adults.

In Natural Breathing the focus doesn’t lie on a particular way of breathing but on the sensations of the body in space, on feelings and thoughts in connection to the experience of breathing. The way the breath flows – fast or slow, strong or shallow, taking up space or retreating, for example -is how we are present in our lives at any given moment.

      What‘s special about my teaching

      1. My breath teaching is influenced by my training – Middendorf teaching (Institut für Atemlehre Berlin), my study – MSc in applied breathing sciences (Graduate School of Applied Breathing Sciences) and 20 years of experience in different body- and movement methods.

      2. I don’t teach breathing techniques and no single method. I invite you on a journey to your body and your breath und to get in touch with yourself in the process.

      How I came to breathwork

In the mid 2000 years I began to do interdisciplinary poetry workshops with schoolchildren. (Creative Writing with movement, drawing, public performance). I noticed that the communication or the creativity were sometimes blocked, in myself as well as in the children and the teachers. I felt helpless and began to observe whenever something went „wrong“ I was tensing my body and holding my breath. It was the same with the children and the teachers. I decided to learn about breathing and discovered the rich world of breath teachings.

      What I love about it

Through exploring, experiencing and learning about breathing I get to know myself, my needs and my talents, independent of social conditioning and expectations. My Natural Breathing practice helps me to be present as a living being and to communicate with other living beings, to feel at home in myself and in my life.

I look forward to breathing with you

“I took part in Nicola‘s “Nature Walk” last weekend. Together as a group we did several exercises which allowed me to better connect with my body, my mind, with other people and nature. I observed how quickly weather and nature can change and at the same time I could experience changes in my own mood and body. This happens all the time and it is entirely natural – this was the biggest discovery for me.

I found Nicola to be a really unique person and very skilled at creating a safe atmosphere for self-exploration. She provided an opportunity for being playful and creative and guided us through this journey of discovery and connection.”
